SANTORINI

No colours are more iconic, or speak to a swimmer’s soul, like the crisp white and blue of Santorini. With whitewashed houses that cling precipitously to cliffs, and distinct beaches made of black, red and white lava pebbles; it’s not hard to find evidence of the 16th century volcanic eruption that shaped this rugged landscape.

Who’s been spotted there?

Kourtney Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Shakira, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie have all fallen under the island’s spell. In fact, Jolie was so taken by Santorini when filming Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life, the actress and her children have made many return trips.

Where to sleep?

Infinity pools that blend into the beautiful blue Aegean are synonymous with Santorini. So, when looking for accommodation, treat yourself. There are options for all budgets. From:

Cave houses (AirBNB link):

Boutique hotels (Canaves Oia link here):

To crisp, luxury suites (Armonia Suites link here):

Where to find the best coffee (and breakfast)?

Surprisingly, given the locals’ propensity for good food, and even better coffee, breakfast spots are hard to find…but not impossible. Head to Hotel Gallini Café, which overlooks the ocean for some mid-morning refreshment.

Where to play?

Sailing is the best way to take in Santorini’s majestic coastline. By renting a catamaran, you can take in the island’s unique rock formations, private beaches, and truly appreciate the cubiform houses that cling to the caldera. If you’re lucky you may even get to swim in volcanic hot springs!

Where to shop?

There is no better way to reward adventurous bones than with a spot of shopping. Drakkar boutique is home to chic international and Greek brands, and our number one pick for goodies. With its youthful vibe, and colourful accessories it’s a sight to behold. Trust us, you’re going to wish you could bring the whole store back with you!

Where to eat, and drink?

The local cuisine is the fare of the day. With a wealth of fresh seafood, and innovative Greek cooking; Selene is a MUST. This restaurant has a host of awards and accolades under its belt.  For example, in 2014 it earned a spot on New York’s renowned 101 Best Restaurants in the World list. This, coupled with its breath-taking view makes Selene a destination in its own right.

PK is a must for cocktails. This family business has been running for 41 years. The bar’s longevity may be explained by the fact the team are committed to using premium produce, much of which is grown fresh in their very own garden. Alongside cocktails, they also offer specialty coffee and cigars.  Friendly tip: a booking at sunset is essential.

Where to swim?

No trip to Santorini is complete without a visit to Amoudi Bay Harbor.  This is the island’s most renowned swimming spot. All you have to do to access it, is walk left along the harbour’s cliff side for 5-8 minutes.  The bay has a small island with stunning views of the caldera that you can swim out to, and ledges you can jump into the sea from.  When your sun-soaked body needs refreshment, simply seek out one of the harbour’s many tavernas. Win win.

What to wear?
