Bora Bora; bungalows perched over calm still waters, and world-class scuba diving have put this picture-perfect destination on the map. But there’s more to this South Pacific island then meets the eye. For one, at the centre of the island rises a dormant volcano. This, combined with lush tropical slopes adorned with hibiscus, and a sweeping blue, green lagoon, makes Bora Bora a place for romantics to fall in love.
Who’s been spotted there?
Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux have honeymooned here, and Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello have graced its shores on Christmas Day. But perhaps the island’s most infamous guest was Justin Beiber. Remember those nude snaps? They were taken on the island. It proves Bora Bora is a place even the famous can let their guard down…
Where to sleep?
From luxury resorts to places for the more modest of budgets, Bora Bora caters to everyone. Although if you’re going to fly all that way, our suggestion is to go for something right on the water, or you know, over it…
Where to find the best coffee (and breakfast)?
If you want a peaceful setting to wake up to the world to, Iriatai at the Hilton caters to that. The restaurant provides its own take on a classic French brasserie and provides a top-notch waterfront view to boot. Now, that’s one hell of a way to wake up!
Where to play?
Did we mention the scuba diving at Bora Bora is world-class? The calm lagoon means the diving is perfect for all experience levels. Beginners can get acquainted with the craft inside the lagoon, while more experienced divers can go outside of the reef. Wherever you dive coral gardens, colourful fishes, reef sharks, sea turtles and stingrays abound! Make the most of the abundant sea life and book yourself a tour.
Where to shop?
Black pearls are only found in the lagoons around French Polynesia, which makes them one of the most popular treasures to buy on the island. Head to Robert Wan Boutique in Vaitape. Wan is one of the best producers of the black pearl, and his collection of fine jewellery will leave you speechless.
Where to eat, and drink?
French, Asian fusion, what’s not to love there? The St Regis lagoon hosts one of the island’s best restaurants and bars in the form of Lagoon Restaurant by Jean-Georges. The view from the overwater venue is stunning, and an amazing spot to catch the sunset with drink in hand. Make sure you make a reservation well in advance though.
Where to swim?
You may have picked up on the fact by now, but you’re never far from water on Bora Bora. That said, one of the best coral gardens is located off the southern end of Motu Pitiaau and Motu Piti Uuuta, and is aptly nicknamed “The Aquarium.” Head here with snorkel in hand to experience the best of the lagoon’s crystal clear waters.
